THING 23....WHOOO HOOO!

Here I am, I haven't even posted my final Thing and I am already subscribing to the next 10 Things that PLCMC has posted. That should tell you something right there... I really enjoyed this and want to continue. I have always been into the latest techy, internet stuff, so this has been great.

I have become addicted to my Bloglines. I've got news, entertainment news, techy news and library stuff. Items keep pouring in all day. I love that I can keep current with all the latest on the internet. I was worried that after the 23 Things, I would get out of touch really quickly. But with my bloglines and the right feeds, I have access to all the new information right away.

Also, though I hate to admit it since I didn't like it at all at first, I love my bookmarking tool. I switched to Ma.gnolia because it is visually more appealing than del.icio.us. But I have it on all the computers I use through out the day and it is great to just hit a button and have a website saved and to know that I will have access to it no matter where I am.

Blogging and wiki's are the other tools that I think we can use in the library system to great advantage. I have lots of thoughts and ideas on how I would like to see us use them in the future.

I think this is a very beneficial program. I have especially enjoyed exploring new technology with some of my co-workers. On a slow night, Cynthia and I had fun recreating ourselves in Avatars. We also surfed youtube, there are some very funny video's out there.

Maybe for those that can't get through all 23 Things we could create some mini-sessions that cover some of the more useful tools (and some of the fun ones). I would be willing to help out with that.

Now on to THING 24......

WEEK 9, THING 21- Podcasting

I have looked at several of the Podcast directory websites. There is so much out there. It amazes me that so many people think they have something interesting to say. How do you weed out the good ones? I searched on knitting and was surprised to see that there are quite a few knitting podcasts out there. How can they do that with no visual? I will have to listen to one to find out what that is all about. I visited one library website that has lots of podcasts of their programs, storytimes, booktalks and more. I am interested in listening to one of the booktalks. What a great way to do "reader's advisory".

Week 9, Thing 22 - Downloadable Audiobooks

I have been using Overdrive since FCPL subscribed to it. Listening to books on an MP3 player is great when gardening, exercising or painting walls, especially if the book is really good. I don't use NetLibrary because it downloads the book as one long file. My MP3 doesn't bookmark, so if something happens and I lose my place, it is a lot of trouble to find where I was in the story.

WEEK 8, THING 19 - WEB 2.0 Awards

How cool. The previous post worked. I wrote it in Google Docs and posted to blog and there it was. Magic. I looked through the Web 2.0 award links and there is lots of cool stuff. I will have to make time to do some further exploring. The one I did use is Ma.gnolia. It is a bookmarking program. I have done a complete 180 (or is it 360?) on online bookmarking tools. I use several different computers at work and then one at home and it is so great to just hit a button on the toolbar to access them or add one instantly. The only thing is, I don't like how del.icio.us looks. That is the one I originally signed up for. Something about the font and arrangement bothers me. So, I checked out Ma.gnolia which is #1 on the Web 2.0 award list. It is so much nicer... and prettier. Even the toolbar button is a flower. I like the groups you can join and getting their bookmarks. I am still getting used to tags. It is hard for me to give up my organized, categorized files, but tags are the future and I will head into it willingly.
